President Joe Biden expressed relief as bipartisan majorities in the House and Senate successfully voted to avert a government shutdown, sparing millions of Americans from unnecessary hardship. This legislation guarantees the continued payment of active-duty troops, smooth travel for the public, and essential nutrition assistance for women and children.
However, President Biden emphasized that this predicament should have been avoided altogether. Just a few months ago, he and Speaker McCarthy had brokered a budget agreement to preempt precisely this kind of manufactured crisis. Despite their efforts, some extreme House Republicans attempted to dismantle the deal by demanding severe cuts that would have had dire consequences for many Americans. Fortunately, they did not succeed.
While the Speaker and the overwhelming majority of Congress have been steadfast in their support for Ukraine, the agreement lacks new funding for this purpose. President Biden stressed the critical importance of maintaining uninterrupted American support for Ukraine during this crucial period. He expressed full confidence that Speaker McCarthy will uphold his commitment to securing the necessary support for Ukraine.
