The Hunt for Titan: Extensive Search Efforts for Missing Submersible

The search for the missing submersible, Titan, continues as multiple assets and organizations join forces in the effort. The Canadian Coast Guard, equipped with sonar capabilities, has been actively involved since Wednesday, supported by commercial vessels such as Skandi Vinland and the Atlantic Merlin. In addition, a Coast Guard C-130 crew has joined the search operation.

A significant development in the search has been the detection of underwater sounds in the designated search area. This discovery has prompted a redirection of remotely operated vehicle (ROV) operations to investigate the source of these sounds. Recordings of the sounds have been shared with the U.S. Navy for further analysis, with the aim of assisting in guiding future search strategies.

To bolster the search efforts, several additional assets are en route to the area. The Canadian CGS Ann Harvey and CGS Terry Fox, along with the Motor Vessel Horizon Arctic equipped with an ROV, are on their way. The French Research Vessel L'Atalante will also join the operation with its own ROV capabilities. Furthermore, His Majesty's Canadian Ship Glace Bay is en route, carrying a mobile decompression chamber and medical personnel. The Air National Guard C-130 and an ROV from Magellan will also contribute their resources to the search.

In terms of specialized support, the Navy is dispatching subject matter experts along with the Flyaway Deep Ocean Salvage System (FADOSS). FADOSS is a motion-compensated lift system designed to handle the recovery of large, bulky, and heavy undersea objects. This equipment will enhance the unified command's ability to retrieve submerged items, such as aircraft or small vessels. The Navy's personnel and equipment are scheduled to arrive at St. John's tonight, providing valuable expertise and tools to aid in the search efforts.

The incident leading to the search began on June 18, when the Coast Guard received a report about the overdue submersible. The 21-foot vessel, carrying five individuals, had embarked on a dive to explore the wreckage of the Titanic approximately 900 nautical miles East of Cape Cod. It was anticipated to resurface at 3 p.m. EDT but lost contact with the Research Vessel Polar Prince one hour and 45 minutes into the dive. Since then, the Coast Guard has been collaborating with international partners and utilizing all available resources to locate the missing submersible.
