LAS VEGAS, NV / CRWE PRESS RELEASE / September 4, 2026 - An athlete who reaches Signing Day without an offer can easily treat the date as a verdict, with signing periods marked, commitments announced, and recruiting classes declared complete. 

Coaching staff work on a different timeline. According to NCSA College Recruiting, college coaches are known to recruit well into the summer months, and while many fill their rosters during the fall, recruiting does not always go as planned, leaving some staffs with open roster spots they continue recruiting for through the summer. NCSA also notes that even after a signing period has passed, athletes can still join a program as a walk-on. 

Why Spots Open Late

Roster needs can change after a recruiting class is largely settled as programs adjust to transfers, injuries, academic situations, and other changes. A staff that considered its class finished in December can find itself short at a position in June.

The players who benefit from those openings are the ones a staff can evaluate when the need appears. That requires something current to look at, which is where an unsigned athlete is often at a disadvantage, since his most recent film is from a high school season that ended months earlier.

What a Season Provides

Athletes competing in the National Junior College Prep Football League practice weekly, attend position meetings, and play a full schedule under staff that include former high school head coaches, collegiate assistants, and former professional players across the league's member teams.

That schedule produces films from the current year rather than the previous one. When a roster spot opens at a program in the spring or summer, someone who spent the fall competing has something current to send. Someone who stopped playing after high school may be asking a staff to make its decision from footage that is by then more than a year old. 

What Athletes Should Take From It

Signing Day may mark a major point in the recruiting calendar, but it does not end recruiting activity. Roster needs can change, and athletes who remain in competition stay current when those opportunities arise.

Players who spend the fall competing have something current to send when a program needs them. That does not guarantee an offer, but it gives a coaching staff something to evaluate when the opportunity appears.

For an athlete who did not receive an offer out of high school, another season can keep the conversation going rather than ending it.
