President Biden and Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm have unveiled a significant development in the drive for a clean energy economy: seven regional clean hydrogen hubs will receive $7 billion in funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. These hubs are poised to boost the domestic market for low-cost, clean hydrogen and significantly advance the nation's clean energy goals, driving economic growth and creating jobs.
The hubs selected for negotiation include:
- Mid-Atlantic Hydrogen Hub (Mid-Atlantic Clean Hydrogen Hub (MACH2); Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey)
- Appalachian Hydrogen Hub (Appalachian Regional Clean Hydrogen Hub (ARCH2); West Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania)
- California Hydrogen Hub (Alliance for Renewable Clean Hydrogen Energy Systems (ARCHES); California)
- Gulf Coast Hydrogen Hub (HyVelocity Hydrogen Hub; Texas)
- Heartland Hydrogen Hub (Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota)
- Midwest Hydrogen Hub (Midwest Alliance for Clean Hydrogen (MachH2); Illinois, Indiana, Michigan)
- Pacific Northwest Hydrogen Hub (PNW H2; Washington, Oregon, Montana)
These hubs are expected to attract over $40 billion in private investments and generate tens of thousands of well-paying jobs, with a focus on creating a more sustainable, cleaner environment for communities. These hubs collectively aim to produce more than three million metric tons of clean hydrogen annually, making a substantial contribution to the 2030 U.S. clean hydrogen production target.
Hydrogen, produced from a variety of domestic sources like renewable energy, nuclear energy, biomass, and natural gas with carbon capture, has the potential to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It is particularly vital for hard-to-decarbonize sectors and industrial processes, including heavy-duty transportation and manufacturing industries. The funding will support innovation and job creation in these areas.
The Biden-Harris Administration is committed to ensuring equitable deployment and benefits of clean hydrogen, with a focus on Justice40 Initiative, which directs investments to disadvantaged communities affected by underinvestment and pollution. To achieve the goal of reducing the cost of clean hydrogen production by 80% to $1 per kilogram within a decade, the Department of Energy (DOE) has launched various initiatives, including a Clean Hydrogen Electrolysis Program and Clean Hydrogen Manufacturing and Recycling RD&D Activities.
Furthermore, the DOE's Hydrogen Hub Matchmaker resource will support the development of networks for the production, storage, and transportation of clean hydrogen. These efforts, combined with private sector commitments, are propelling the United States toward becoming a leader in clean hydrogen production and innovation.
