Senior officials from the Biden-Harris Administration held a listening session with union leaders and officials from the labor community to discuss the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on workers, jobs, and the future of work. Union leaders expressed concerns about the risks AI poses to workers' jobs, health, privacy, and civil rights. They highlighted the importance of collaboration between unions, workers, and employers in developing AI solutions that benefit workers' lives.
The session was attended by representatives from the White House National Economic Council, Office of Science and Technology Policy, and Office of the Vice President. Government officials emphasized the need for collaboration with unions to understand the risks associated with AI and effectively mitigate potential harms for workers.
Participants discussed the deployment of AI tools in the workplace, noting instances where they have increased workplace stress and negatively affected mental health. However, they also acknowledged cases where AI tools have helped support workers in performing repetitive or dangerous tasks. Privacy, civil rights, and workers' autonomy were also key topics, including concerns about employers using AI to monitor and collect data on workers.
Union leaders stressed the importance of preserving workers' access to high-quality jobs that prioritize their well-being and involving workers in decisions regarding AI deployment in the workplace.
This meeting is part of the Administration's ongoing efforts to engage various stakeholders on AI-related issues and promote responsible innovation. The Administration has taken steps such as investing in responsible AI research and development, issuing executive actions and a blueprint for an AI Bill of Rights, and holding listening sessions with workers and civil society leaders.
The session included prominent union leaders from organizations such as AFT, CWA, AFL-CIO, SAG-AFTRA, Teamsters, AFSCME, IATSE, United Food and Commercial Workers, WGA East, NEA and United Auto Workers. Government participants included officials from the White House National Economic Council, Office of Science and Technology Policy, and Office of the Vice President.
