The Biden-Harris Administration has made a historic announcement, allocating over $40 billion to connect every American to affordable, reliable, high-speed internet. This marks the largest internet funding announcement in history and is part of the Administration's commitment to ensuring that high-speed internet is accessible to all Americans. With more than 8.5 million households and businesses lacking access to high-speed internet infrastructure, this investment aims to bridge the digital divide.
The funding, provided through the Broadband Equity Access and Deployment (BEAD) program, will support high-speed internet infrastructure deployment in every state, territory, and the District of Columbia. Allocations range from $27 million to over $3.3 billion, with a minimum of $107 million granted to each state. Notably, 19 states received allocations exceeding $1 billion, with top allocations going to Alabama, California, Georgia, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina, Texas, Virginia, and Washington.
By combining these allocations with previous investments by the Biden administration, all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the territories will have the necessary resources to connect every resident and small business to reliable, affordable high-speed internet by 2030. The funding not only aims to expand internet access but also supports manufacturing jobs and promotes private sector investment by utilizing materials made in America.
In addition to the BEAD program, the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law includes various initiatives to enhance internet connectivity. These include the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP), which provides eligible households with subsidies on their internet bills and assistance in acquiring devices. The Digital Equity Act supports communities in developing the skills needed to leverage high-speed internet, while the Tribal Broadband Connectivity Program focuses on high-speed internet deployment in Tribal lands. The Department of Agriculture's Reconnect Program provides loans and grants for rural high-speed internet infrastructure, and the Middle Mile Program funds the backbone of internet networks.
The Biden administration has also allocated funds through the American Rescue Plan, including the Capital Projects Fund, the Coronavirus State and Local Fiscal Recovery Funds, and the Emergency Connectivity Fund. These initiatives further contribute to expanding high-speed internet access across the country.
