Hawaii Wildfires Prompt Federal Aid: President Biden's Response

  • August 11th, 2023

President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. has taken decisive action, declaring a major disaster in Hawaii due to the wildfires that commenced on August 8, 2023, and are ongoing. This declaration initiates Federal assistance to augment the state and local recovery efforts in the affected regions.

The move enables Federal funding to be directed towards individuals in Maui County who have been impacted by the wildfires. This aid encompasses various forms of support, including grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses, and additional programs designed to facilitate the recovery process for individuals and business owners affected by the disaster.

Moreover, Federal funding is available to state and eligible local governments, as well as specific private nonprofit organizations, to support debris removal and emergency protective measures in Maui County. Emergency protective measures for Hawaii County are also eligible for assistance.

To ensure a comprehensive approach to recovery, Federal funding is accessible on a cost-sharing basis for hazard mitigation measures statewide.

Heading the Federal recovery operations is Mr. Maona N. Ngwira of FEMA, who has been appointed to coordinate assistance efforts in the affected areas.

As damage assessments continue, additional forms of aid may be designated following the completion of these assessments.

Residents and business owners affected by the disaster can initiate the application process for assistance through various channels, including the website www.DisasterAssistance.gov, calling 800-621-FEMA (3362), or utilizing the FEMA App. Individuals using relay services are encouraged to provide FEMA with the relevant service contact information to ensure seamless communication.
