The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has unveiled its implementation plan for advanced air mobility (AAM) operations, which includes steps to ensure the safe integration of highly automated and electric aircraft known as air taxis or electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (eVTOL) aircraft. AAM has the potential to revolutionize transportation, aligning with the Biden-Harris Administration's goals of efficiency, sustainability, and equity, while creating numerous job opportunities.
In addition to passenger transportation, AAM aircraft can be utilized for cargo transport, firefighting, search and rescue missions, and connecting underserved communities. The FAA's "Innovate28" plan outlines a roadmap for achieving scalable AAM operations at one or more sites by 2028, focusing on key components and their sequence of implementation.
According to the FAA, the plan ensures industry scalability while prioritizing safety. It establishes procedures for aircraft and pilot certification, airspace management, pilot training, infrastructure development, security measures, and community engagement. Furthermore, the plan includes a comprehensive guide that can be adapted to various AAM site locations, highlighting integration objectives and sequences.
To accomplish these goals, multiple entities will collaborate, including the FAA, AAM industry, NASA, Department of Homeland Security, Department of Energy, power industry, and state, local, and tribal communities. The FAA is actively engaging with stakeholders through the Advanced Air Mobility Interagency Working Group.
The plan follows the FAA's recent release of its airspace blueprint and proposal for pilot training and certification rules for AAM operations. Highlights of the plan include predetermined flight schedules for pilots, operation within controlled airspace up to 4,000 feet altitude, infrastructure planning and development by stakeholders, potential upgrades to the power grid, security assessments led by the Department of Homeland Security, environmental considerations, and community engagement efforts to address concerns such as noise mitigation.
The FAA's implementation plan sets the stage for the future of advanced air mobility, advancing the integration of innovative aircraft technologies and sustainable transportation solutions.
