Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken visited Beijing, China, where he held meetings with President Xi Jinping, Director of the CCP Central Foreign Affairs Office Wang Yi, and State Councilor and Foreign Minister Qin Gang from June 18-19.

The discussions, described by Matthew Miller, the U.S. Department of State's Spokesperson, as candid, substantive, and constructive, focused on key priorities in the bilateral relationship and global and regional issues. Secretary Blinken emphasized the importance of maintaining open channels of communication to avoid miscalculations and manage competition responsibly. According to Miller, the United States will raise concerns and explore areas of cooperation through diplomacy.

Both sides agreed to continue developing principles to guide the bilateral relationship, along with addressing specific issues through joint working groups. Strengthening people-to-people exchanges, including increasing direct flights, was welcomed. Resolving cases of wrongfully detained American citizens and combating the flow of synthetic drugs were highlighted as priorities.

Secretary Blinken, as stated by Miller, raised concerns about unfair economic practices, actions against U.S. firms, human rights violations, and emphasized the U.S. commitment to its values. Maintaining peace across the Taiwan Strait was underscored, reaffirming the U.S. one China policy.

Global and regional security issues, such as Ukraine, North Korea, and PRC intelligence activities in Cuba, were discussed. The United States will collaborate with allies and partners to promote a free and rules-based international order.

Addressing shared challenges like climate change, macroeconomic stability, food security, public health, and counter-narcotics was emphasized. Both sides agreed to continue senior engagements in Washington and Beijing and scheduled reciprocal visits.
