In a press statement issued by Matthew Miller, the Department Spokesperson, the United States expressed deep concern over the Israeli government's announcement to advance planning for over 4,000 settlement units in the West Bank.
The reported changes to Israel's settlement administration system, which expedite planning and approvals, are also a source of worry. The United States reiterated its longstanding policy of opposing unilateral actions that hinder the achievement of a two-state solution and impede peace efforts.
The U.S. government calls upon Israel to honor its commitments made in Aqaba, Jordan and Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, and urges a return to dialogue for de-escalation.
The West Bank is a region located in the Middle East, bordered by Israel to the west, Jordan to the east, and Jerusalem to the south. It holds significant political and historical importance, as it has been a focal point of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The status of the West Bank is a subject of contention, with Israel maintaining control over certain areas through settlements and military presence. The region is also home to a significant Palestinian population, and the establishment of Israeli settlements in the West Bank has been a contentious issue, as it is considered by many to be an obstacle to the achievement of a lasting peace and a two-state solution.
The future of the West Bank remains a complex and deeply debated topic, with various international efforts aimed at finding a resolution to the conflict.
